When people look for ghosts, what are they really looking for?

well I believe the after life (death) theory, but I really hope it is not wondering aimlessly wanting to be mortal again, and spooking people, if I had nothing better than to wonder around in a house that once belonged to me in mortal life for all eternity I would probably want to kill myself all over again, and wished that all the skeptics were right.
